Our History
Monarch Services was founded in 1977, when volunteers secured a grant to open the safe shelter, Mariposa House. The agency continued to grow to meet the need for safe shelter and services to domestic violence victims.
In 1987, the agency became one of the first Rape Crisis Centers to be funded in California, and was instrumental in developing and implementing one of the first Sexual Assault Response Teams in the nation. We currently serve approximate 1,500 victims of domestic violence and sexual assault each year.
All of our crisis intervention and prevention services are available in Spanish and English and are culturally sensitive. Printed materials are also available in both languages. Our outreach efforts have concentrated on poor Latino neighborhoods with residents that have several barriers to seeking services, including language, literacy and legal status issues, and cultural biases. We are extremely proud of our success in serving this special population.

The Women & Children's Shelter of Barrie has been providing shelter and support services to abused women and children since 1981. The agency consists of a 27 bed crisis shelter along with Outreach services onsite. Approximately 1,000 women and children are assisted by the agency annually. In addition to shelter, staff provide individual and group counselling, legal information and support, court support, information about violence against women, referrals to other community and social services, and public education in the community.

Wise Hope Shelter & Crisis Center (Wise County Domestic Violence Task Force)
Wise County Domestic Violence Task Force was organized in 1997 as a grassroots organization to address the needs surrounding violence against women in Wise County and its rural communities. A 501(c)3 entity, the agency opened on August 2, 1999 with one part-time employee funded by a United Way allocation. The agency now known as Wise Hope Shelter & Crisis Center since 2006 has grown to a staff of 17, hundreds of active volunteers, a 4,800 square foot shelter, an Outreach Office, a thrift store and in excess of $750,000 in annual funding. We have been offering services to victims of sexual assault as well as domestic violence since 2008. Our service area also has expanded to include Jack and Montague counties.
Wise Hope Shelter & Crisis Center is dedicated to providing compassionate, comprehensive services to any person impacted by rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence, dating violence and/or stalking while partnering with our community to promote safety, healing, and prevention.

Haven House was founded in 1979 by the Coalition for Victims of Domestic Violence (now known as the Erie County Coalition Against Family Violence) and is a recognized leader in the provision of domestic violence services. Haven House works to prevent domestic and intimate partner violence and promote peace in the home. Our services for survivors include an emergency shelter in a confidential location, long-term transitional housing, and counseling to help individuals cope with the pain and trauma of violence in the home.Â
Haven House serves survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence ages 16 and older and their children. Haven House does not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender, or disability.

True North began as the “The Shelter†in the 1970’s when a group of University of Missouri graduate students formed a volunteer organization to serve survivors of rape. As soon as the organization became known, the volunteers were overwhelmed with requests for service by women who were experiencing intimate partner violence.
True North is now a comprehensive domestic and sexual violence victim service program. The services provided are designed to empower those who have been battered or abused by an intimate partner, enabling them to begin the healing process and work towards regaining control of their lives again.

The Cascade Women's and Children's Center
We provide immediate assistance to victims of domestic violence and put them on the path to independence at this 24-hour shelter specifically designed for women and children escaping domestic abuse. The center provides everything from health referrals, counseling, and transportation to GED certification programs, parenting classes, employment assistance, and permanent housing placement. We also offer children a nurturing environment in a therapeutic preschool program. The location of the facility is kept private for the safety of our clients.
The Phoenix Elim House
This refuge offers a safe haven to families of up to eight and children 17 and under, harboring over 1 million women each year. Over the course of up to 120 days, Elim House empowers victims of domestic abuse through personal goal and safety plan development. They also offer crisis counseling and recreational activities, such as field trips, games, and arts and crafts, for children escaping domestic violence.
Northwest Division Center
We put victims of domestic abuse on the road to recovery with this extensive program. In addition to providing confidential emergency and transitional shelters, we help them take steps toward recovery and living independently.

Alternative Horizons
Alternative Horizons (AH) was established in 1978 with the purpose of providing support to survivors of domestic violence in rural La Plata and San Juan Counties. AH was founded by a group of women who believed that no one ever has a right to abuse or control another human being. These women, many of whom were survivors of domestic violence themselves, were committed to ensuring that survivors could find safe, confidential help, information, and support.
Alternative Horizons's founders collected donations to set up a telephone hotline and volunteered to respond to calls 24 hours a day. They organized a volunteer Board of Directors and established AH as a nonprofit organization. At that time, domestic violence was regarded as a "private family matter" that belonged behind closed doors. They educated the community that domestic violence is instead a larger societal problem causing enormous damage to the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. These steadfast women began a service that has benefited thousands of survivors for over forty years.
Today, AH is the primary nongovernmental provider of nonresidential services for survivors of domestic violence in La Plata and San Juan Counties, providing help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Services have expanded to meet the ever-increasing needs of individuals and families who are not safe within their own homes and relationships. In 1993, criminal-court advocacy services were added to assist survivors in navigating the legal system following perpetrators' arrests. In 2008, AH added an on-staff attorney to provide civil legal assistance. Community outreach has been continually expanded and includes educating young people about the warning signs of intimate-partner abuse.
All of AH's services are free, confidential, trauma-informed, voluntary, open and inclusive to survivors of domestic abuse and violence.

Victim Services of Leeds & Grenville will endeavor to help reduce victim trauma by providing emotional and practical support, referrals and resources after a crime or tragedy has occurred. We will also provide a single point of entry to other programs and services within a victim’s community, assisting with navigating the system and thereby helping to reduce an individual’s sense of helplessness, confusion, and stress.
